Art And Automobiles

Since their invention, automobiles have become an integral to the society and culture of the United States. Cars have been the inspiration for movies, TV’s shows, video games, books and comics, and even music.

It is impossible to rate the importance and influence of Don McLean’s “American Pie.” Written in 1971 about the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, and later expanded to include other artist, this song has really come to represent good old fashioned America and the early, glory days of rock and roll. Specifically the line, “I drove my Chevy to levy, but the levy was dry,” sealed Chevy’s already growing place as an American icon. The song was number 1 for 4 weeks on the Billboard charts. It inspired the hit song, “Killing Me Softly,” by Roberta Flack, and made the words, “the day the music died,” famous everywhere. It is largely considered one of the best songs in American history. Moving ahead a decade brings us to the 1980′s and Bruce Springsteens, “Pink Cadillac.” This somewhat ironic, rockabilly song was penned by Bruce Springsteen in 1984 and released on the B side of “Dancing in the Dark,” however this song did not become famous until 1988 when Natalie Cole covered it. It did give us a hint of things with the phrase, “I just wonder what you did in the back of your pink Cadillac.” While Mary Kay cosmetics may benefit from this song, it was not written about them. Come to Georgia used cars for a great deal.

Keeping with the 80’s theme we now go to Prince and a song about a girl and yet another Chevy. In 1983 Prince released his album 1999, and his first top ten Billboard single with “Little Red Corvette.” It was also his first song to perform better on the pop charts then the R&B charts, this largely due to the rock/pop music in the chorus. Most people don’t realize this song is one big sexual analogy, which works well for Chevy’s marketing team. Then there is “Drive My Car” by the Beatles. It was released on the Brittish version of Rubber Soul in 1965. The song tells the story of a man who meets a woman who claims she will be a famous movie start and she offers him the chance to be her chauffeur. When he finally agrees to it, she then admits that she does not have a car. Paul McCartney admitted later that this song posed some of the more difficult lyrics for him and John Lennon to write. He also later admitted that much like Prince’s “Little Red Corvette,” the phrase “Drive My Car” was another sexual reference.
